I am truly proud to be a member of the Eagle family.  NCCU has been such an integral part of my life.  My father, the late Clarence Phillips, class of 1956, was a graduate of this university.  My mother, Mrs. Shirley Phillips was on several occasions a guest speaker in the home economics department where she represented DeShazor's Beauty College.  Growing up, I attended the Summer Camp program where I met many people and developed many skills.  In addition, as a member of Hillside High school band we participated in NCCU's homecoming parade and often attended the game afterward.  Upon coming to college, I met my husband, Mr. Reginald Johnson and many other great people.  My educational experience was wonderful.  As a student, I was motivated, encouraged , supported, pushed and challenged in many ways by my instructors.  As a current High school Business Teacher I try to provide my students with the same "experiences" that my  NCCU professors gave to me.  Thank you NCCU for showing me who and what I could become and helping me fly.  Thanks also for continuing the nuturing and support for my son who is the 2009-2010 SGA president--Mr. Dwayne Johnson.

NCCU has left an indelible mark upon my life!  Being the son of two Eagles (Betty Cooper Montgomery 58' and the late Albert Montgomery 57') I grew up on the sloping hills and verdant green listening to the wonderful stories of their time spent there.  With that background, it inspired me not only to attend and excel while there, but to have a sense of commitment and giving back, not only to the University, but to the community at large.  Our motto "Truth and Service" has provided the foundation for all my endeavors, and it is in this spirit of our founder, Mr. James Shepard I strive to help make our world a better place.

In the early 1950s my mom, the late Jimmie Lue Tabor-Steele, attended Summer School and was a student in a reading clinic sponsored by the College of Education here at Central.  She also had plans to come back and to attend the School of Library Science (she started a library in a rural community that she taught in) but due to marriage, a teaching career and having all three of us (myself,Al and Jim) she did not have the chance to come back.  Instead she sent me to Central.  I fell in love with the campus and the city of Durham instantly, had several crushes on quite a few very cute male Eagles and ended up earning two Master's degrees.  And I used them, most notably the History degree with over twenty years as a museum educator at Old Salem,Inc. The school made me what I am today which is a very strong person, sister and aunt to very three special little girls.  I will be an Eagle forever.

“I cannot explain the surge of pride that I feel when I think of NCCU. Every step that I have taken academically and professionally is firm and with confidence because of what I learned and experienced at NCCU. Thank God I am an EAGLE!
- James E. Lyons II; NCCU Class of 1996

I am a proud 2001 graduate of North Carolina Central University!  The memories that I have while at this prestigious universiy will forever be dear to my heart...from Eagleson to Latham, from the Communication Bldg. to the Criminal Justice Bldg.  I must not leave out both football & basketball games. Now I share the greatness of NCCU with my children, preparing them for their days as a SOARING EAGLE...EAGLE PRIDE!
- Shafeqah M. Mordecai, Class of 2001
